What Are The Benefits Of Being A Vegetarian
In our Western society, a common nutritional belief is that meat and animal products must be consumed in order to maintain a well-balanced, muscle-building healthy diet.
In most cases, if someone dares to stray away from this line of thinking, they’re immediately branded as being some sort of a hippie, or just downright weird.
With that said, the number of people turning to vegetarian diets is increasing by the day. Even well respected doctors and other health related experts are starting to change their opinions, and many have also begun prescribing vegetarian meals in order to prevent and treat certain conditions, one of which is obesity.
Although the idea of being a vegetarian is often considered to be a relatively modern craze, vegetarianism has been around for several centuries already, and in many parts of the world, such as in India for example, thousands of people live quite happily on a vegetarian diet. Interestingly enough, there’s a group of people known as the “Hunza” which live very close to the Himalayan Mountains, and there are many reports suggesting that it’s a common for these people to live beyond the age of 100.
According to the American Dietetic Association, A vegetarian diet includes a number of benefits. These include: 1) reduced cholesterol; 2) reduced levels of saturated fat; 3) enhanced levels of important minerals and antioxidant vitamins; 4) lower body fat; 5) lower risk of heart disease; 6) lower blood pressure; 7) lower risk of type-2 diabetes; and
lower instances of several cancers.
Obesity is a serious health concern in many Western countries, and yet it can be controlled by means of vegetarian diets which increase fiber intake while at the same time reducing protein and fat consumption. Because a vegetarian diet results in people having a lower Body Mass Index, they can be effective at managing several chronic illnesses.
Most people who consider going on a vegetarian diet are concerned about whether or not they’ll be able to get enough protein. This is certainly a valid concern, but one also needs to realize that providing your vegetarian diet is a well balanced one; you’ll get all the protein your body requires
On the other hand, the average meat based diet provides the body with too much protein, and this of course can be harmful. According to one particular report, too much protein can result in a person losing approximately 30% of their kidney function by the time they reach their senior years. Some studies also suggest that too much protein can result in the body pulling excessive calcium out of the bones, and if that happens, it can lead to osteoporosis.
Switching to a vegetarian diet doesn’t mean your meals will only consist of celery sticks, apples and nuts. After all, thousands of people eat vegetarian meals in a number of combinations. These would include, but are not limited to:
Lacto vegetarians – these people don’t eat meat or eggs, but they do consume dairy products such as milk and cheese for example.
Lacto-ovo vegetarians do not eat meat, but will eat dairy products and eggs.
Ovo vegetarians do not eat meat or dairy products, but will eat eggs.
Vegans will not eat meat, eggs, dairy products, or any other kind of animal products for that matter.
There are nowadays an abundance of health organizations which are promoting vegetarian diets and diets which include primarily plant based foods.
Also, the number of restaurants and supermarkets that provide vegetarian meals and products has grown exponentially in recent times.
